After serving in Washington, Dana has not become one of them. He still believes in low taxes and more take-home pay. He still fights for local control of our schools and less bureaucracy and works to open more opportunity for our young people through fewer federal regulations and restrictions in our lives.
ECONOMY
DANA VOTED NO ON THE WALLSTREET BAILOUT
IT LACKED SCRUTINY, GUIDELINES & HAD NO REAL REFORM.
When other less courageous members of Congress were stampeded into voting for a $700 Billion taxpayer ripoff, Dana was a strong NO vote against the the Wallstreet Bailout. Dana knows that hundreds of billions of dollars will end up being given to foreign banks and others who don’t deserve to get their hands on our limited tax dollars. Dana has received numerous awards from taxpayer organizations for his diligence in protecting the interests of ordinary Americans. He’s willing to take on the big guys in order to protect the little guys.
Dana has been the champion of lower taxes, especially supporting the elimination of the Death Tax.
He still fights against wasteful and unnecessary government spending, and he still backs policies that keep inflation down. That means, unlike other politicians, he never promises something for nothing, and he often says NO to new spending schemes.
MORE ENERGY AND A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT
Here are some of the many things Dana Rohrabacher has done that have or will lead to a cleaner and healthier environment, especially here in Southern California:
1. Brought NOAA in to study our local coastal currents rather than simply focusing on deep ocean experiments
2. Co-sponsored legislation to require testing of waters used by the public, and that the results be quickly posted on the internet
3. Demanded Long Beach and L.A. ports open at night to relieve congestion and to reduce pollution.
4. Currently, championing the building of a high-tech cargo container movement system between the posts and the inland empire railways, which would take 20,000 trucks off the roads a day.
5. Supporter of nuclear power, especially the new ultra-safe High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor.
6. Supported federal research into alternative energy systems.
Over the years, Dan Rohrabacher, an avid surfer, has been criticized for his insistence that America use its energy resources, including off-shore oil and gas deposits. For 30 years, radical environmentalists prevented the development of infrastructures capable of using the vast oil and gas fields America has to offer, prevented nuclear power plants from being constructed, even prevented the building of hydroelectric dams. Had we moved forward on all these fronts, as well as with renewable energy like solar, wind and geothermal, Americans would not be suffering $4 a gallon gasoline today.
Rohrabacher supports a full throttle ahead approach to make us energy independent from foreign despots and protecting the hard-earned income of our citizens from being robbed at the gas pump.
Recently, Rohrabacher authored legislation to prevent the Bureau of Land Management from withholding permits thus stopping the building SOLAR electric projects. Representative Rohrabacher has also become the major advocate for a new and safer nuclear reactor, the high-temperature gas cooled reactor.
TECHNOLOGY & PROGRESS
For eight years, Representative Rohrabacher was Chairman of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, where he pushed for more private sector investment, which led to the passage of the Commercial Space Act. He was also known for his efforts to deal with the potential threat of space objects (astroids, meteors, comets, etc.). As a result of his leadership, NASA began a program to plot the course of space objects that could threaten millions of lives. The Planetary Society, recently joined by Representative Rohrabacher in calling for a greater commitment to this effort.
Rohrabacher advocates cooperation with Russia and our European allies as part of an international effort to detect and deflect any meteorite or other space object that threatens the earth.
On the Science Committee, Representative Rohrabacher has been a voice of reason concerning the so-called man-made “global warming crisis”. He has pointed out the many changes in global temperature in the past, as well as the changes on Jupiter and Mars to suggest that cycles in climate are a product of solar and other natural causes, and not human technological progress. An increasing number of scientists, many of them prominent PhDs, have voiced their skepticism of this main-made climate change theory. This, however, does not mean we should be lazy in developing alternative energy sources that will clean the air, water and soil, which provide America more energy independence.
In Congress, Dana has been a forceful champion of the technology rights of American inventors. Large corporate interests have repeatedly tried to scrap America's venerable Patent system and replace it with weak global patent rules, which would facilitate the theft of America’s ideas and innovations. Each time, Dana has led the successful effort to beat them back.
PLAYING A LEADING ROLE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Representative Rohrabacher advocates cutting off all government benefits to those who are in our country illegally. He also supports strengthening the border and holding employers accountable for hiring illegals. He believes that such a policy would result in a large number of illegals going home voluntarily. He also believes it is immoral to use our limited education and health resources to help those who are here illegally at the expense of U.S. citizens and legal residents.
During his tenure in office, Rep. Rohrabacher has voted for or supported legislation that:
- requires employers to check the legal status of those they hire
- provides funds for the building of a viable fence along our southern border
- mandates reform of a visa system to prevent visa overstays
- reaffirms that illegal aliens are not eligible for Social Security
Representative Rohrabacher has opposed any form of amnesty. His strong and active opposition to President Bush’s plan to “normalize” the status of illegals was instrumental in mobilizing public opinion and defeating the bill in the Senate.
Rohrabacher further alienated President Bush by leading the effort to free Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean. The two Border Patrol Agents were prosecuted by the Bush Administration after they interdicted a Mexican drug smuggler as he was crossing into our country; they shot at him as he fled following a physical altercation with one of the two Border Patrol Agents. Representative Rohrabacher is still doing all that he can to free these two Border Patrol Agents who were unjustly imprisoned for doing their duty.
Dana applauds the many contributions of America’s legal immigrants and believes our nation’s diversity is a great asset. However, Dana remains one of the most outspoken advocates of tougher policies to stem the massive flow of illegal aliens into our country, including deportation of those who have broken our immigration laws.
He condemned President Bush for his attempt to grant amnesty to illegal aliens and for his unconscionable prosecution of and refusal to pardon Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean.
LOCAL ISSUES - WATCHING OUT FOR US
Over the years, Dana oversaw the now nearly completed Santa Ana River Project. This major constuction progam protects a million Southern Californians from massive flood damage and has lifted the burden of flood insurance from most local residents. This Army Corps project has been on time and under budget. Unfortunately, the new Democrat-controlled Congress wjould reimpose flood insurance on us even though the Santa Ana River Project has made it unnecessary. Dana is trying his best to fight and win on this issue, and protect his constituents from wasteful and unnecessary expenditures on this insurance.
To lessen local freeway congestion, Dana insisted on changing the operating hours of trucks hauling containers from our local ports so that trucks could then travel at night. This program has been highly successful in reducing traffic from our freeways.
With extra funds needed for port security and upkeep, Dana has authored legislation permitting a container fee to be levied so the foreign companies using our ports will pay their fair share. Dana is now pushing for a container movement system to get 20,000 trucks per day off the road.
Dana's Congressional office has been the catalyst for emergency preparedness training and cooperation between federal, state and local governments. Dana has sponsored coordinating sessions which brought fire, police, hospitals, national guard, and other first-response teams together. In case of terrorist activity or natural disaster (earthquake), we are better prepared than ever before. Over 6,000 local first-responders have been trained thanks to Dana's efforts.
Similarly, Representative Rohrabacher and his office have played a significant role in overseeing security in our local ports.
Representative Rohrabacher brought Ron Nobel, head of Interpol, to meet with State, and local law enforcement to strengthen the international cooperation in capturing criminals and thwarting terrorists.
Representative Rohrabacher has seen to it that funds have been awarded to Westminster Police in order to fight foreign gangs in Little Saigon.
Representative Rohrabacher led the fight to ensure the billions of dollars in aviation assets at El Toro Marine Base would be utilized to turn the former military base into an international airport. This would have been of enormous benefit to the people of Orange County, as well as Long Beach and Palos Verdes as pressure would be taken off LAX, Long Beach and John Wayne Airports. The fight was unsuccessful, but Dana was watching out for us.
PUBLIC SAFETY - WATCHING OUT FOR US
Dana Rohrabacher and his staff have been instrumental in the training and equipping of 6,000 local police, firefighters and healthcare first-responders, the very personnel who will protect us if America’s terrorist enemies hit Southern California, or if we suffer a major natural disaster.
NATIONAL SECURITY -
WATCHING OUT FOR AMERICA
Representative Rohrabacher believes the first priority of any decision made by our government should be the long-term well-being and safety of the American people. He does not believe we are well-served by giving power and authority to international organizations. He believes we should not depend on the United Nations for our security or to preserve peace and stability. In fact, Representative Rohrabacher, as Chairman of the Oversight and Investigative Subcommittee, played an important role investigating the oil-for-food scandal, which disclosed hundreds of millions of dollars in U.N./ Saddam Hussain related bribes and corruption.
Representative Rohrabacher is solidly behind America’s armed forces, and America’s efforts to defeat radical Islam, tyranny, and the sponsors of terrorism. Long recognized for his expertise in Afghanistan, Dana was the strongest voice in the Congress, demanding action against Bin Laden and the Taliban long before 9-11. He was personally involved in creating and then rallying support behind what became the Northern Alliance. Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has praised Congressman Rohrabacher for his contributions in the War on Terror and in playing “a significant role in helping to develop the effort for driving out radical Islam and the Taliban Regime from Afghanistan in 2001.”
1 1/2 years ago Representative Rohrabacher did not give into pressure to oppose the Surge of U.S. troops, which is now credited with turning the tide in Iraq against the radical Islamists there. The time has now come, however, for the Iraqi people to pick up the burden of the struggle against the enemies of freedom in their country. Representative Rohrabacher has authored legislation insisting, at the very least, that the Iraqi government agree to pay the expenses for any further U.S. military operations in their country.
Dana still believes America should be committed to human rights and a champion of democracy in the world. In particular, he has been a powerful opponent of Communist China’s economic war on America’s manufacturing infrastructure.
Representative Rohrabacher has received the Medal of Freedom awarded for his role in fighting Communism and in sponsoring the legislation creating a Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington, D.C. He has also received an award from Amnesty International for his fight for Human Rights in China. He also is one of the few Americans to be awarded a royal medallion from the King of Afghanistan, for all he did to defeat Soviet invaders in Afghanistan, as well as the radical Islamist Taliban.
SENIORS
Dana has consistently voted to end both the Social Security Earnings Limitation and the Death Tax, which unfairly impact our seniors. He supported the creation of the Prescription Drug Program aimed at relieving some of the burden of expensive medicine. Importantly, he has insisted that any Social Security or Medicare reform not bankrupt the system and that it totally protects current recipients.
Dana voted for the Medicare prescription drug benefit, noting that it would save money in the long-run if wonder drugs prevent the need for costly heart and other operations.
EDUCATION & FAMILY VALUES
After serving in Washington, Dana has not become one of them. He still believes in low taxes and more take-home pay. He still fights for local control of our schools and less bureaucracy and works to open more opportunity for our young people through fewer federal regulations and restrictions on our lives.
Representative Rohrabacher believes the most effective way to help our local schools is to end the flow of illegal immigrants who are flooding in our classrooms and consuming scarce education dollars that should go to our own children. Similarly, the best thing that can be done to help our local healthcare is to end the free services being provided to illegal immigrants. Free education and healthcare to illegals means less for our own citizens and legal immigrants.
While some candidates would remove any mention of God from public buildings and end prayers that begin our public meetings (even prayers that begin meetings of Congress), Rohrabacher has held firm a respect for traditional values. For 10 years he was co-Chairman of the Scouting Caucus, protecting the right of Scouts to include God in their Scout Oath and to maintain high moral standards for Scoutmasters.
Dana pledges that he will do his best to reverse the outrageous court decision outlawing God in our Pledge of Allegiance and will work to see that judges are appointed who will protect our religious freedom and traditions.
VETERANS
When our National Guard and Reservist troops arrive back from Iraq and Afghanistan, they find Dana Rohrabacher there to welcome them home.
Dana voted for the new G.I. Bill and, himself, co-authored legislation to help our returning vets deal with financial crises that may have befallen their families while they were away defending our country.
Our vets have kept faith with us; Dana has made sure we’ve kept faith with them.
Our older veterans may remember Dana also authored legislation to give American survivors of the Bataan Death March the right to sue Japanese companies that used them as slave workers.
As a friend of America’s veterans, Dana Rohrabacher insisted that America keep its promises to those who have served. His Congressional office has a full-time staff member on duty to meet the needs of our veterans. |
